How to Warm Up Your Home With That Fall Feeling

Fall is such a special time of the year. The colors are vibrant, the air is crisp and holiday season is finally upon us! For many, fall is also a time of creative renewal. As we are all preparing to spend more time indoors, now is the perfect time to give your home a fall refresh.

Here are some tips on how to capture all those great fall elements and put them to use in your very own home!

1. Accessorize

Fall-themed accessories are one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to introduce fall into your home. For starters, try some candles in large cylindrical "hurricane" holders. We carry one with a navy and wood-toned based that will bring warmth and sophistication your your room.

You can choose from an array of items to fill the hurricane with including, but not limited to, cranberries, pine cones and flowers. You can also purchase artificial pumpkins, squash and cranberry stems that you bring out just for the season!

2. Fall For Flowers (and Leaves and More)

Bring on the feeling of fall by placing brightly coloured floral arrangements throughout your home. Oranges, reds and yellows echo nature's seasonal palette. Local shops Flowers by Merle and Victor Michaels Florist offer stunning fall arrangements, and our 124th street neighbours Studio Bloom even offer flower arranging workshops.

Speaking of nature, remember that flowers and foliage don't have to be elaborate or expensive. Take some fallen leaves from your maple trees and or pine cones and arrange in a shallow bowl. Don’t throw away those garden flowers when cleaning up your flower beds at the end of the season. Bring those flowers into your home and use them as a centrepiece. Sunflowers are a great example but you can use any flowers that are in the deep red, orange and yellow colour families.

3. Change Up Cozy Coverings

Don’t limit yourself to just using fall accessories strategically placed in your home. Bedding, linens and throws are another great way to show off your excitement of the season. Changing up throw pillows can have a big impact on your furniture, too. Opt for literal fall elements like this leaf-motif pillow from Precedent, or go with several fall colours in a single pattern like this Kaleidoscope design from Classic Home.

Think beyond fall colours and consider texture as well. Chunky knits and soft cozy blankets can add allure to any sofa or bed. Flannel sheets can also be a great addition to your bedding when the weather starts to turn chilly. Imagine warming up your room with a bedding set like our Wyatt package.

These updates don't just look great, they can help you get comfortable and save on heating bills as temperatures drop!

4. Set The Table in Style

Table settings are an important part of the season, especially as holiday hosting picks up.

You can bring in that fall feeling with burlap table runners and place mats. Rustic wood napkin rings and colourful charger plates are other great ideas.

Chargers are decorative plates you place under your food-safe dinnerware, and can be an inexpensive way to change the whole table setting without investing in a new set of dishes. Hunker offers some great tips for working with charger plates here.

You can’t go wrong with classic white plates that can be used for many of your other holiday gatherings as well. They will work with or without charger plates.

5. Stimulate the Senses

We often think only visually when we design our spaces, but we experience our homes with all of our senses. Texture and layout appeal to our sense of touch. The sounds we hear in a space set a tone, so this may be a great time to build your ultimate fall playlist. Or to listen to one of of the many available on services like Spotify. This playlist has a great autumn vibe.

Smell is another great way to make your home feel warm and inviting. Candles, diffusers, potpourri and oil diffusers are just a few examples of methods you can use to bring in some fall scents to make you and your visitors feel warm and fuzzy. Shades of Grey Boutique, just across the street from us, carry a beautiful gold diffuser. Cinnamon, pumpkin, cranberry and even apple pie are all great scents that are available in all kinds of different aromatic dispensers. We'd love to try this Canadian Maple candle from our neighbours at Red Ribbon.
